为了使法律文书具有严肃、庄重而又神秘的风格，除了使用拉丁语、法语等非普通英语用词外，经常使用正式程度较高的词汇（formal words）是实现这一风格的措施之一。这类词汇还包括许多委婉语（词）。例如，死去的人(the dead)，在法律英语中会用the deceased或the decedent (Mellinkoff, 1963:19)。以下略举几例：
